Visual Journaling

Showing from January 16 - August 28, 2022

Ms. Fink finds inspiration for her oil paintings both close to home and in her travels. With her French easel, she paints en plein air using a prismatic palette. It is her journey to see more by observing closely while painting from life.

Audrey Yee Fink

“Most people are familiar with keeping a written journal to document their memories, committing words to paper. Others grab a camera and compile photographs into digital photo albums. I keep a different sort of journal. I mark my memories in oil paint on canvas.

Each of these works (en plein air) depicts a scene within a three hour drive of Hawthorne, NJ, where PCAC is located. A viewer of my work could travel to the exact spot where I had set up my easel and painted, potentially, seeing what I saw.

Of course, prevailing weather conditions and time of day would alter the view but nonetheless, the elements (i.e., a particular structure, tree, stream, etc.) would be present to mark the location.

In some instances, I painted from the same location a few days apart, sometimes a year later. This allows the viewer to see the transformation from week to week or year to year.”

Artist Statement

Audrey finds inspiration for her oil paintings both close to home and in her travels. With her french easel, she paints en plein air using a prismatic palette. It is her journey to see more by observing closely while painting from life, with the goal of capturing and preserving her impressions on canvas.

Audrey loves the outdoors where finding subject matter is never an issue. Beauty surrounds her. Working spontaneously, as light changes with the movement of the sun, is both challenging and exhilarating. Every painting cements a memory.

“Nature alone can lead to the understanding of art, just as art brings us back to nature with greater awareness. It is the source of all beauty, since it is the source of all life.”
