Meet the Artist

Profile Image, Susan Zulauf

Susan Zulauf

For as long as I remember, I needed to paint. It’s in my soul.

For the longest time I wanted to be an artist at Hallmark Cards. After graduating from R.I.T. with a BFA, I was hired by Hallmark as a Line Designer for the Calendar and Stationary Lines.

From there I moved to the tri-state area to become the Creative Vice President with The Stephen Lawrence Co., responsible for all aspects of the model line and on the boards.

Forward to having triplet sons and then a baby girl, quitting my job and starting my own studio, Zulauf Designs, licensing my art worldwide to manufacturers and major retailers. Horsefeathers, JUNK, Collage were 3 craft galleries in Ridgewood NJ that I co-owned over the course of 15 years along with running my studio.

Five years ago, I decided to make a career switch and became an Interior Designer at Safavieh in Paramus NJ creating entire homes for clients. At that time, I also switched my artistic focus from decorative arts to fine art. A tough transition but incredibly joyous.

Along with Interior Designer, I create a painting a week and then promote my art on social media, galleries and commissions.

I have 2 very different hands: Impressionist paintings in textured gesso, acrylics, papers, gold leaf on stretched canvas. Wildlife Portraits in super realism technique, mixed media.

“The only constant is change.” Has always been my motto in life.

Artist Statement

Susan Zulauf’s ‘mark of the artist’ is exemplified in her textural paintings of landscape and nature. With an almost Fauvist use of color combined with gestural and experimental uses of paint, form, decorative motifs, and materials, the glamorized beauty of nature is present.
