Artist Statement
Photography, for me, is a means to explore my connection to familiar places and uncover layers hidden beneath the surface. My work is inspired by Minor White’s reflections in The Camera Mind and Eye, where he describes the transformative experience of truly seeing, waiting patiently for a moment when the ordinary transcends itself, when “light performs the magic.” This philosophy resonates with me; it is how I experience my surroundings, particularly the landscapes of New Jersey—its houses, roadways, trees, and mailboxes—as well as the weather that transforms them.
In my series, Near the House by the Brook, I capture images from around Goffle Brook Park, an area that shaped my experience. Fog, dawn, dusk, night, and rain lend an otherworldly quality to the familiar, turning simple scenes into extraordinary. This process of photographing these moments is as meaningful to me as the images themselves. In these times, I feel as though I am capturing a reflection in the river of life for just an instant, not a reflection of myself, but of an essence of place that connects me to memories.
The printing of these images allows me to relive that sensation. My hope is that each photograph serves as a doorway to those fleeting moments and memories, and the viewers may also have a shared sense of place, time, and memory. The landscapes and homes around Goffle Brook Park may have changed, but this place will always be a wellspring of imagination and inspiration for me, and a reminder of photography’s power to transform the ordinary into something magical.
