Summer at the Wayne Museum!

When did it become August?! Summer is flying by at the Wayne Museum, but we’ve been busy with community events, research and writing, and behind the scenes work!

In June, we kicked off our second Family AG Day series! Joined by fabulous participants like Lokai Rose, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, the Wayne Public Library, and more, we’ve been able to offer environmental and history themed activities, historic games, and community outreach onsite every other Sunday. Lavene Gass has also joined us to lead yoga and meditation, and the Phonograph DJ and Bach to Rock have kept the music going. Though we’ve dealt with some weather cancellations, we’re looking forward to our remaining dates- August 7th, August 21st, September 11th, September 25th, and October 9th– all held from 11am to 2pm! Check out the event listings for an updated list of our participants for each day.

The very talented Hudson Shakespeare Company has also been joining us for performances of Hamlet and Much Ado About Nothing! Continuing our Shakespeare in the Park series from last year has been a blast, and we’re looking forward to their final performance TONIGHT, August 4th, at 7pm!

On July 17th, we also hosted our first Dutch Houses Bus Tour, visiting the Van Houten House in Totowa, the Hamilton House and Vanderhoef House in Clifton, the Passaic County Arts Center at the John W. Rea House in Hawthorne, and the Dey Mansion (and of course our museum!) in Wayne. We had an amazing time, and we’re hoping to host more bus tours in the future.

Besides our events, we’ve got lots of Wayne 175th themed research and writing in the works! Working with TAPInto Wayne, we published two articles this summer- The Land Purchase that Eventually Became Wayne Township and the Continental Army Visits Wayne. Our most recent blog posts this summer have been geared towards biographies of Wayne residents: Dr. Jane Colfax and William Colfax!

Collections work is also ongoing, and we’re continuing to catalog and box all the artifacts not on display! Most recently, we’ve been cataloging our cap collection (and finding time to be a little silly about it! Feel free to let us know in the comments below which cap you’re feeling like today).

The summer’s not over yet, and we’ve still got lots more to come- virtual lectures, more AG Days, collections work, TAPInto Wayne articles every month, and more!! Check out our event calendar for a full listing of our upcoming events and plan your visit by keeping up to date with our closures and tour schedule. Stay tuned on our Facebook and Instagram for our weekly #WayneWednesday, and we hope to see you onsite soon!
