Hearts of Oak Coming to Dey Mansion
Admission inside the Mansion will be $5.00 per person, children 6 years of age and under are free.
The Hearts of Oak were a volunteer militia that was formed circa 1775 in New York City. Militia members included students at King’s College (now Columbia University) most famous was Alexander Hamilton who was given a commission in 1776 as a Captain. Uniforms consisted of a short green jacket, round leather hat with a cockade and the phrase “Liberty or Death” on the band, and a badge of red tin hearts on their jackets with the words “God and Our Right."
The Hearts of Oak Independent Militia Company will be performing military drills and fife and drum demonstrations at the Dey Mansion on November 18th. There also will be lace making, hand drawn portraiture, dancing, and music played on a harpsichord ongoing throughout the day.
