SUMMARY:Passaic County Arts Center Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 24\, 2026 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Passaic County Arts Center at the John W. Rea House to celebrate the opening of our newest exhibits! \nLight refreshments to be served. \nThis event is free to the public — please RSVP. \nClick here to RSVP. \nAmerica’s Tapestry\nIn the winter of 1780\, General Washington and the Continental Army encamped at the Dey family estate in Passaic County — and it was the women of the household\, free and enslaved\, who kept the army fed and clothed. Leading the “Ladies of Trenton\,” Hester Dey and her daughter-in-law raised more than $15\,000 for the cause. Their story is the keystone of America’s Tapestry\, a national exhibition commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence through thirteen hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies. Each panel spotlights a lesser-known event or individual from the founding era. Communally stitched by nearly 2\,000 volunteers aged 3 to 968 across thirteen states\, the exhibition debuted at the Muscarelle Museum of Art at William & Mary and was featured on NBC Nightly News. SUMMARY:Victorian Hairwork Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 19th century of the Victorian Era was a time rife with sentimental culture. Death rates were high due to numerous factors including disease\, war\, and high childhood mortality. Queen Victoria was an unlikely fashion icon and submerged herself in mourning after the deaths of both her husband\, Prince Albert\, and her mother in 1861. Aside from her mostly black wardrobe\, she was widely known for her love of mourning jewelry\, which contained hair of a loved one inside. \nVictorian hairwork became very popular in both jewelry and shadowbox form during the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th century. It transcended the concept of a wearable human relic into a fashion statement during this time period. \nIn today’s workshop\, participants will learn to create wire-work items that can be used in shadowbox creation. We will be working with copper wire and horsehair to form intricate twists and braiding that can be manipulated in various ways to form flowers\, leaves\, berries\, and other shapes. Participants will be able to make an item suitable for mounting in a frame\, or wearing as a brooch or hairclip. \nClick here to purchase a ticket.
