SUMMARY:Reception: Portraits of Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special reception on Saturday\, September 19th from 1pm-4pm. Questions and Answers with the artist\, Gabo Padilla\, and special guests at 2:30pm. \nPortraits of Resilience\, is an exhibition that combines intimate portraits with social commentary on the struggles of homeless individuals. Created in both charcoal and oil\, each portrait is accompanied by testimony in the subject’s own words\, recounting their personal journey. This series of portraits is a powerful example of art and life affecting change on each other. Viewers will be asked to both look at the painting\, and listen to a life\, shattering the comfortable distance of observation. \nLocal artist Gabo Padilla is the painter and founder of the Citizens Outreach Foundation\, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people in need\, in Paterson\, NJ. When asked about the project he said\, “what started off as a series of portraits\, evolved into something that’s been truly life changing.”

SUMMARY:Paterson: Art & the Mills- F. Duignan & Neighbors
DESCRIPTION:On May 11th\, 2026\, the Paterson Museum will open a new exhibition\, Paterson: Art & the Mills- F. Duignan & Neighbors. On view through July 31st\, 2026\, this exhibit will explore the creative atmosphere of the Essex and Phoenix Mills and celebrate the artwork of several of its residents. \n  \nIn 1983\, Paterson initiated subsidized housing for artists in two old abandoned mills in the newly designated Great Falls / SUM Historic District.  These two\, former silk mills were among many empty factory buildings in the district that had once manufactured a variety of products including locomotives\, guns\, silk and machinery. In the 1980s all types of artists were invited to apply to live in the new housing—painters\, musicians\, poets\, photographers\, and arts workers with the hopes of establishing a creative community and a shop and gallery center. \n  \nPaterson: Art & the Mills- F. Duignan & Neighbors focuses on the visual artists who lived in the refurbished mills from the 1980s to the early 2000s and some who still live there today. This heterogenous group of art makers shared this housing\, the neighborhood\, and engaged in a noisy\, creative interaction. \n  \nPlease join us for a special reception on Saturday\, May 16th\, from 1pm-4pm. Informal conversation with the Guest Curator\, Sara Lynn Henry at 2:30pm. Sara Lynn Henry is an independent curator\, art writer\, and Emerita Professor of Art History and N.E.H. Distinguished Teaching Professor of Humanities\, Emerita\, Drew University. \n

SUMMARY:Open House Reception: Women in America’s Revolutions 1776 and 1926
DESCRIPTION:The American Labor Museum commemorates the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 100th anniversary of the 1926 Passaic Woolen Mills Strike by offering a year-long exhibition which celebrates the roles of women in each of the landmark events. The exhibit\, “Women in America’s Revolutions 1776 and 1926\,” officially opens to the public on Wednesday\, January 7th\, 2026\, followed by an open house reception on Sunday\, March 8th\, 2026 at 1pm\, in conjunction with the museum’s Annual International Women’s Day March. \nBoth anniversaries provide the opportunity to shine a light on working women and those of privilege who courageously stood up to the establishment despite any consequences they faced. The Museum invites the general public to discover the fascinating and inspiring “untold stories” of revolutionary women who contributed to the freedoms and dignity with which citizens live in America and New Jersey. \nLearn more on the American Labor Museum website. \nThis exhibit is made possible in part by a grand administered by the Passaic County Cultural and Heritage Council from funds granted by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
