SUMMARY:Lecture: Washington’s Army at Valley Forge
DESCRIPTION:Why did George Washington choose Valley Forge as the Continental Army’s winter encampment in 1777–1778? And how did that decision shape the outcome of the American Revolution? \nJoin historian and Valley Forge guide Kenneth Gavin for an engaging lecture that goes beyond the familiar story of the army’s winter hardships. Drawing upon primary source documents\, Gavin examines the strategic\, political\, social\, and economic considerations that made Valley Forge the practical choice for the Continental Army’s main encampment during the winter of 1777–1778. \nBy looking beyond the traditional narrative of suffering and endurance\, this lecture offers a deeper understanding of why Valley Forge became one of the most consequential locations of the Revolutionary War. \nThis event is free to the public. Registration encouraged. \nClick here to register for this event.

SUMMARY:Hammered History: Punched-Tin Keepsakes
DESCRIPTION:Discover the art of punched-tin decoration at the Dey Mansion. During the 18th and 19th centuries\, pierced metalwork brought both beauty and function to household objects such as lanterns\, candle shades\, pie safes\, and food-storage cabinets. The small openings created decorative patterns while allowing light or air to pass through. \nVisitors can stop by throughout the day to make a punched-tin ornament inspired by traditional geometric\, floral\, and star designs. Using a prepared metal blank\, pattern\, and simple hand tools\, participants will carefully punch their chosen design into the surface. Each finished piece can be tied with ribbon or twine and taken home as a keepsake. This ongoing activity is suitable for families\, although children will require adult assistance.

SUMMARY:Lecture: The Battle of Golden Hill\, 1770
DESCRIPTION:The Battle of Golden Hill was one of the more obscure conflicts during the Revolutionary Period. This skirmish in the center of New York City in January 1770 was born out of the frustration of not only the Sons of Liberty in New York\, but of a larger group of citizens who were weary of years of military overreach. \nThe men who fought on the inhabitants’ side participated in one of the first successful coordinated acts of resistance by the colonial population against the British military system. Join Program Specialist Vivian Davis as she explores colonial frustrations\, the British response\, and how this early confrontation foreshadowed the outbreak of war in the colonies. \nThis program is free to the public. \nClick here to reserve your seat!

SUMMARY:Special Preview of The American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Passaic County Celebrates PBS Premiere of The American Revolution Featuring Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters in Wayne \nSpecial local screening and community event planned for November 30 \nWayne\, NJ — Passaic County is proud to announce that Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters in Wayne will be featured in THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION\, a new six-part\, 12-hour documentary film from acclaimed filmmakers Ken Burns\, Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt. Premiering Sunday\, November 16\, 2025\, at 8:00PM ET on PBS and streaming on PBS.org and the PBS App. \nTimed to the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution\, the film tells the sweeping story of the men and women who fought\, sacrificed and imagined a new nation. Through rare archival materials and vivid storytelling\, it explores how thirteen British colonies united in rebellion\, secured independence and shaped a republic that continues to define the world today. \nOne of the key sites featured in the film\, Dey Mansion Washington’s Headquarters\, operated by Passaic County\, served as General George Washington’s command post during the pivotal Summer and Fall of 1780. The site remains one of the most significant Revolutionary War landmarks in the nation and a centerpiece of Passaic County’s ongoing preparations for America’s 250th Anniversary. \n“Passaic County played an essential role in the fight for American independence and Dey Mansion stands as a living testament to that legacy\,” said Commissioner John Bartlett. “To see our County’s heritage represented in a national Ken Burns documentary underscores just how central New Jersey\, and Passaic County in particular\, were to the Revolution and the founding of our nation.” \nTo mark the premiere\, Passaic County will host a special public screening of The American Revolution at the Hawthorne Theater on Sunday\, November 30 at 1:00PM. Residents\, students and history enthusiasts are invited to join this celebration of local and national heritage as part of PBS’s nationwide engagement campaign. \nFollowing the screening\, attendees are invited to a community discussion and reception with food and drinks at The Celtic Corner Pub (312 Lafayette Ave\, Hawthorne). As part of the festivities at the pub\, historian and author Damien Cregeau will deliver an engaging talk on Faith Trumbull Huntington\, the remarkable daughter of Connecticut’s governor Jonathan Trumbull and an overlooked influence on early American art. Drawing from his newly released book\, Portraits of Patriots: Colonel John Trumbull and Five Fellow Patriots from Connecticut in the American Revolution\, Cregeau explores how Faith’s artistic pursuits profoundly shaped the career of her younger brother\, John Trumbull\, later celebrated as the “Painter of the Revolution.” His presentation offers fresh insight into Faith’s life\, her tragic early death and the legacy she left on American cultural history. \nFor more information about the PBS film\, visit pbs.org/americanrevolution.
